There are names for varying shades in English — for instance, cerulean or azure would fall under the category of голубой, and navy or ultramarine for синий. Unlike in Russian, however, this differentiation between shades is not mandatory. Therefore, in English, there are no true categories of blue besides "light blue" or "dark blue".

To my recollection, Russian is the only European language that makes this obligatory distinction.
